6km is the average distance women and children walk every day in the developing world to have access to water.

Currently, close to one billion people don’t have access to clean, safe drinking water (one in eight). 1.8 million people die every year from water-related diarrheal diseases. Ninety percent of those are children under five years of age. 443 million school days are missed due to water-related diarrheal diseases. Fifty percent of malnutrition is caused by water-related diarrheal diseases

This is why we run.

I participated in the Dow Live Earth Run for water 2010 on 18th April to support the cause. Money raised from the event will go towards funding water purification and filtration solutions around the world.

Between now and 17 September 2010 you can make any day Earth Day in support of the global community by writing in support of Millennium Development Goal 7. Environmental Sustainability. The United Nations General Assembly will be holding a High-level Plenary Meeting, also referred to as the ‘MDG Summit’ in New York. The Summit’s main focus will be to build on what we have learned during the past 10 years since the adoption of the Millennium Declaration and how to accelerate progress towards the internationally agreed development goals, in particular MDGs. The Summit will take stock of the successes, best practices, lessons learned, obstacles and gaps related to the MDGs and other development goals. You can also support any of the other 7 Millennium Development Goals at Make Noise of the Millennium Development Goals http://bit.ly/amapeN

I’m sure you are aware that our environment is acting weird lately, summer days are hotter than usual, rainy days are drowning places we never imagined it could, earthquakes are everywhere, volcanoes are being active again, bird and sea creature migrations are getting weirder.

On April 22, 2010 the world will celebrate the 40th year of Earth Day, more than ever though our planet is in a greater peril. Climate change is the greatest challenge of our time. This is our chance to grab our opportunity into turning our world, our only one planet earth into a healthy, clean energy and prosperous economy for our children and our children’s children.

Eliminating plastic bags is becoming part of the conversation across the nation. www.conservingnow.com is an large community of individuals dedicated to preserving the planet for future generations. Our members are committed to eliminating plastic bags from their lives and while the commitment is strong, it still can be a challenge. Why? Our members told us over and over that they often forget their reusable bags so we created a FREE car window static cling to help them remember their bags ever time they go shopping.

This static cling accomplishes two things: 1) it is the last thing you see when you get out of the car (reminding you to grab your own bags ;-)) and 2) demonstrates your commitment to the environment to others.

Go to www.conservingnow.com and get your FREE car window static cling today!

I feel great pride in this big blue planet of ours. I have a big interest in paleontology and wanted to tie my interests into my contribution back to our glorious planet. It took some thinking but I've decided to grow Ginko and Metasequoia seedlings, both with a long lineage and long though extinct until one wonderful day with modern species were discovered.

So, I've marked Earth Day 2010 on my calendar and will plant my "fossil" seedlings in a special ceremony, giving back both life and a cleaner atmosphere.
