Fight For Preemies

November 17, 2009

Objective:
Every year, 20 million babies are born too soon, too small and very sick ― half a million of them in the United States. November 17 is when we fight.

Do you know a baby that was born too soon, too small, unable to suck, unable to breathe on his own? Premature birth is a health crisis that jeopardizes the lives and health of nearly half-million babies each year. It is the #1 killer of newborns and can lead to lifelong disabilities. Worse: the number has increased 31 percent since 1981. It can happen without warning and for no known reason. Until we have more answers, anyone’s baby, could be born too soon.

Medical advances give even the tiniest babies a chance of survival, yet for many babies premature birth is still a life or death condition. It’s the #1 cause of death during the first month of life. And babies who survive face serious health challenges and risk lifelong disabilities.

The rate of premature birth has never been higher. In half the cases, we simply don’t understand what went wrong. We need to fight for answers. And, ultimately, preventions.

November 17 is dedicated to raising awareness of the crisis of premature birth. The March of Dimes invites bloggers like you to get involved.

• Learn about premature birth at marchofdimes.com/fightforpreemies

11/17/09 I have 3 preemies

by: TripMomma

Our triplets were born at 31 weeks and spent a tad over a month in the NICU. It was the hardest time of our lives and many tears were shed. We are lucky and have very healthy 16 month olds now but our journey will never be forgotten. My thoughts and prayers go out every night for those babies fighting to survive.

11/17/09 My preemies

by: lilliesmom

My daughter was our first preemie. She was born at only 26 weeks gestation weighing only 2 pounds and was 14 inches long. My son was our second preemie. He was born at only 28 weeks gestation weighing 2 pounds 9 ounces and was 14 1/2 inches long. Today they are 5 and 3 1/2 and doing great! It was a long journey but was all worth it. We remember every day how blessed our family is to have our babies! They still do not have a reason for why I delivered them both so early. I have started my blog so

11/17/09 Miracle Baby Girl

by: bbreenc

Our second daughter was born this March, at 26 weeks + 2 days. The weeks of bedrest before her arrival felt helpless. Even more desperate, were many of the 88 days in the NICU that followed her birth. Thanks to the outstanding medical care of the loving doctors and nurses, she left the hospital before her due date. We continue to be amazed by her daily progress and unbelievable spirit. She is our truest miracle.
