a gorgeous granddaughter

by: jeholzer

Sara was born at about 29 weeks last December and weighed a little over one pound. She spent 3 months in the NICU, coming home at about 4 pounds. This November she weighs 15 pounds, has no apparent deficits, is a happy, healthy, charming baby girl. The NICU nursing staff deserves a national day of thanks from all of us!!

My Angel Gabriel

by: gabesmomma

My son was born at 27 weeks 2lbs 13oz and 14". He was getting stronger by the day and off the ventilator and breathing on his own. At 2 weeks of age he developed a preemie illness called NEC a illness that mostly only happens to preemies and they don't know exactly why it happens. He spent 9 months of his 10 in hospitals. Hopefully with the help of March of Dimes and research we can find out more about answers to why NEC happens. Lets all come together for the fight. We love you and miss you Gabe!!!

March For Dimes to benefit from new UK movie !

11/11/09

by: AlanEntwistle

In January 2005, our son Jack was born at 24 weeks: weighing 1 pound 6 ounces and just 9 inches tall. After a little over 100 days in our regional NICU he was eventually transferred to our local NICU where he had his first bath.

Jack’s courageous story - in the face of a key UK health body threatening to withdraw support for babies born before 25 weeks - was featured in the UK’s Sunday Mirror newspaper back in 2006:

findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4161/is_20060402/ai_n16206402/

Over the past two and a half years I have written a screenplay of Jack’s early weeks in NICU and am pleased to say the script is now complete – and also getting some great responses from the movie community!

I was thrilled when a producer said the following about the script:

“I got to read your script over the weekend and found it extremely moving; what an experience to have had. The emotional peaks and troughs are covered fantastically, the medical detail is great and the characterisation of medics is also impressive.”

This British independent movie is set to feature a mix of new and rising TV and film stars – and we’re planning to make the film in 2010, for a 2011 worldwide release – so it’ll be coming to a cinema near you!

Our hope is that some of the profits from the movie will be donated to March Of Dimes – I’d love to hear back from anyone who can introduce me to their key fund raisers! Please can anyone help with this?

Many thanks to all concerned for the 17th November worldwide Fight For Preemies blog!

I would welcome any support you and your fellow bloggers could offer by spreading the word on this forthcoming quality feature movie that is set to give back!!

Many thanks
Alan.

God Bless you all and your preemies

My son was born full term at 38 weeks on June 20th, 2009. When i was 22 1/2 weeks pregnant, just 4 days after find out that I was having a boy, i was told that my son had a heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome. My husband and I had less than 2 weeks time to make a decision on whether to terminate our pregnancy or go forward with it. We of course wanted to give our son the fighting chance that he well deserved fully well knowing that there was a possibliity he may not survive. When he was born, he was taken to NICU where he was for just over 24hrs before they scheduled his emergency surgery, the Norwood Procedure. He survived the surgery but only continued to have complications before he finally passed on July 1, 2009. My son was a fighter and I am so blessed to have had the time I did with him. I am so thankful for the march of dimes, fighting to find a cause for premature birth and heart defects...this is such a wonderful organization and my family and I are very proud to be a part of it. This past April before our son was born we did the 6k march for babies in downtown portland. Although I was 7mo pregnant at the time, we survived because we believed...we believed that we were walking for the very baby growing inside of me and indeed we were...

The journey of a 25-weeker from sickness to health

11/06/09

by: 25weekpreemie

My son was born at 25 weeks at 1 pound, 12 ounces. After years of home oxygen, medications, specialists and tests, I actually now refer to him as "healthy," as in "I'm so blessed to have 2 beautiful, healthy children." Doesn't mean he'll ever have the robust lungs as his full term sister, but considering his early prognosis, I feel like we've won the lottery.

Read about him here: http:6512andgrowing.wordpress.com/ (check the "prematurity" category)

Wanted: Pictures of your sleeping preemies

11/05/09

by: rechelle

My husband and I created a photoblog called www.SleepingBabyPhotos.com where we showcase funny pictures of babies (mostly our own babies) while they're taking their naps.

We think it would be a great idea if we depart from our usual "funny" pictures and instead post pictures of preemies sleeping instead. That would be a great way to promote our cause and would also be great to promote your blog or anything thru our website. You are free to write your own credit.

Every year, 20 million babies are born too soon, too small and very sick ― half a million of them in the United States. November 17 is when we fight.

Do you know a baby that was born too soon, too small, unable to suck, unable to breathe on his own? Premature birth is a health crisis that jeopardizes the lives and health of nearly half-million babies each year. It is the #1 killer of newborns and can lead to lifelong disabilities. Worse: the number has increased 31 percent since 1981. It can happen without warning and for no known reason. Until we have more answers, anyone’s baby, could be born too soon. Medical advances give even the tiniest babies a chance of survival, yet for many babies premature birth is still a life or death condition. It’s the #1 cause of death during the first month of life. And babies who survive face serious health challenges and risk lifelong disabilities. The rate of premature birth has never been higher. In half the cases, we simply don’t understand what went wrong. We need to fight for answers. And, ultimately, preventions. November 17 is dedicated to raising awareness of the crisis of premature birth. The March of Dimes invites bloggers like you to get involved. • Learn about premature birth at marchofdimes.com/fightforpreemies • Put a badge on your blog during November, Prematurity Awareness Month® • On November 17, blog for a baby you love and to help others We need to fight ― because babies shouldn’t have to. .............................................................................
