Amazed with the number growing!

11/05/09

by: yvonnemaire82

I cannot believe how big the number is growing with all the support for everyone fighting for babies who are and were born preemie! Both of my kids were born premature and I know the feeling of what it's like to have your own angel born too soon and had to stay in the hospital being taken care of by doctors and nurses. This has been going on too long and we really need to do all we can to help every baby be born full term and healthy. There were times that I had wished that my kids were born full term, so that I could bring them straight home from the hospital with me instead of later while in the NICU. I am very glad and thankfull for the March of Dimes for all the hard work they do to help babies be given a healthy start.

my BLESSING

11/05/09

by: kris10

I call my daughter a blessing because she brought joy to my life when I had none at the time. She was born at 26 weeks gestation. She weighed in at 2lbs. 10oz. She was in the NICU for 2 months where she was having beta cardia on a regular basis. I didn't realize the extremeity of the issue at the time because I had just turned 18 a couple days before.
What started the whole thing was a urinary tract infection that I got from drinking too many sodas. When I was younger I got them all the time. I took some meds for it, but, they didn't work and I went into labor the last day I had to take the Macrobid. Then, I had the most beautiful baby I had ever seen.
She is now 8 years old and 70 something pounds with the occasional nosebleed and that's all she got from being born premature! My youngest is also a blessing except she was born with tethered cord syndrome and it's actually a closed spina bifida and she can walk, run, and climb!! She had surgery at just 4 months old! Now I would like everyone to know who may not believe that there is POWER IN PRAYER!!! My children are proof!

I will be posting on my usual semiweekly schedule about research involving music and prematurity. Here's the first post: www.wikyblog.com/CynthiaWunsch/Wednesday,_November_4,_2009.

I hope that this will help someone--it's in a format you can be sure your doctor will take seriously.

33weeks 4days

11/03/09

by: aconnelly1

Our daughter was born at 33 weeks and 4 days. She was a big preemie weighing in at 6lbs 11oz, but because of her weight many health problems were overlooked. At 8 days old she went into cardiac aresst and was intibated. At 11 days old she underwent heart surgery and had repairs done effectively. My pregnancy was typical I gained 30 lbs, blood presure was great, vitals for both of us was great. Then my water broke the day after my baby shower and 4 hours later our beautiful daughter was born. My room was full of doctors and nurses and our daughter was rushed to the nicu.I couldn't hold her I wasn't even given the chance to see her. Today she sits on my lap and reads what I am writing, she turned 6 in september and is very bright and quick. My family and I walk every year for the march of dimes and share our story. Why she was born early we will never know, but thanks to God and her doctors we have enjoyed our daughter for 6 years and with Gods blessings for many more years to come.

Born 24 weeks and 4 dyas gestation

11/03/09

by: agent117

Our son Toby was born at just 24 weeks and 4 days gestation, weighing 669 grams. He spent 121 days (around 4 months) in hospital fighting for his life for much of this time. I had severe neurological preeclampsia. I spend four days in ICU and another 2 weeks in the hospital.
Many people made me feel like this was my fault, that I had done something wrong. These people need to be re-educated about pregnancy, premature birth and premature babies.
With out the work and expertise of the Doctors and nurses at RPA Hospital in Sydney Australia our little guy would not be with us today.
There are a lot of discussions at the moment in Australia about whether babies should be saved so early due to the cost associated with their care and because the population is growing older and the money should be put towards aged care - I invite all these people who agree with this to come and meet our son, hear our story and see how well he is doing.
Toby had plenty of problems while in hospital (infections, PDA, ROP III, etc) BUT he is developing to his corrected age and has no disabilities. They seem to always show the negative stories on TV, babies born early who die, or have severe disabilities, but they need to show the positive outcomes too and even if a child has severe disabilities due to prematurity who are they to say that they don't have a right to live, they are happy children who enjoy life!!

Thanks

Kiersten born 2 pounds 6 ounces

I had an emergency c-section at 31 weeks due to severe preeclampsia. My placenta had stopped giving mutrients to the baby and had lost all my amniotic fluid. They thought that the baby would die before the had a chance to operate. My little girl was 2lbs 6oz and 14 inches long. She spent 6 weeks in the NICU. She never needed any oxygen and was very healthy considering how small she was. I was however the hardest thing that I ever did. I had to travel an hour and a half everyday to go see her in the hospital. I felt so guilty but the nurses in the NICU made me feel so comfortable and were always there if I needed them. Today she is 20 weeks old and weights 9lbs 8oz and growing!!

My nicu baby

10/28/09

by: MamaCampbell

My second daughter was born at 33 weeks via emergency c-section due to my sudden onset of severe preeclampsia. I basically went from normal numbers to needing to get this baby out now in less than a week. She was born breathing on her own at 3lbs, 12oz and didn't need oxygen at all during her 18 days in the nicu. She's 9 months old today and probably around 17lbs and thriving. I look at pictures taken of her in the nicu and cannot believe how far she's come since January & how you couldn't even tell she's a preemie anymore.

My cousin was born at 35 weeks and stayed in the nicu for 90 days because of his disabilities. He is a sweet, smiley 7 year old today. I am grateful for the wonderful support from the nurses and great technological advances the march of dimes has made in order for them to be alive today.

Born at 32 weeks, 2 days gestation

My son was born on December 1, 2008. He was a big 32 weeker at 4 pounds, 5 ounces. He developed two episodes of NEC while in the NICU. He was on 10 days of gut rest, then 7 for the second episode. He was finally able to come home after 47 days in intensive care.

Today, he is a happy, healthy 10 1/2 month old who weighs just over 21 1/2 pounds. People who meet him can't believe he was a premie. He is the light of my life and I am thankful every day for this amazing blessing!

Blessed mther of a 1.1 lb 26 wkr

My daughter was born at 26 weeks and weighed only 17 ounces due to my incompetent cervix. She was in the NICU for 3.5 months. Looking back I don't know how we got through it, but our little girl is a fighter for sure and make it through with flying colors! She is now 4 yrs old and the happiest little girl on the planet. Now we are in the hospital once again on bedrest at 25 weeks with a precious baby boy. I've done everything my wonderful Dr's have instructed from placing 3 cerclages, weekly progesterone injections to now being on strict hospitilized bedrest. I pray for all mothers out there going through what we have been through and are still going through and hoping for one more last miracle...

Mom of a 27 weeker

Not all premature births are caused by preterm labor.

Premature births are not always the "mother's fault," as is so often implied. Mothers can receive prenatal care, be ideal patients, and still give birth prematurely.

My daughter's heart stopped in utero at 27w2d gestation because of chorioamniitis. If she had not been delivered by emergency c-section at that time, she would have died. She was 2 lbs 1 oz at birth and stayed in the NICU for 61 days.

My hope is that we begin to work on the causes of prematurity that we already understand: chorioamniitis, HELLP, pre-eclampsia, placenta problems, and many others. Research should still continue into premature births with no clear cause, but I truly hope we can begin to make headway solving the IDENTIFIED causes of prematuriy.

Every year, 20 million babies are born too soon, too small and very sick ― half a million of them in the United States. November 17 is when we fight.

Do you know a baby that was born too soon, too small, unable to suck, unable to breathe on his own? Premature birth is a health crisis that jeopardizes the lives and health of nearly half-million babies each year. It is the #1 killer of newborns and can lead to lifelong disabilities. Worse: the number has increased 31 percent since 1981. It can happen without warning and for no known reason. Until we have more answers, anyone’s baby, could be born too soon. Medical advances give even the tiniest babies a chance of survival, yet for many babies premature birth is still a life or death condition. It’s the #1 cause of death during the first month of life. And babies who survive face serious health challenges and risk lifelong disabilities. The rate of premature birth has never been higher. In half the cases, we simply don’t understand what went wrong. We need to fight for answers. And, ultimately, preventions. November 17 is dedicated to raising awareness of the crisis of premature birth. The March of Dimes invites bloggers like you to get involved. • Learn about premature birth at marchofdimes.com/fightforpreemies • Put a badge on your blog during November, Prematurity Awareness Month® • On November 17, blog for a baby you love and to help others We need to fight ― because babies shouldn’t have to. .............................................................................
