RSV Protection for Preemies is Important

10/20/09

by: jteitelman

rsvprotection.com/

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infects nearly all babies by the age of 2. In adults and children, RSV usually causes mild cold-like symptoms. But in premature babies and children with certain other medical conditions, it can develop into a serious respiratory illness requiring hospitalization.

Let's raise awareness!

10/20/09

by: 25weekpreemie

My son was born at 25 weeks almost five years ago. He's traveled a rocky path, studded with many blessings and infinite good luck. Reminders of his rough start still haunt me periodically but he has dodged more bullets than I can count. Read about his story on my blog: 6512andgrowing.wordpress.com/ (check the "prematurity" category)

Thanks,
Rachel

Critical cause

Daughter was born 3 months early. Scary stuff that these preemies have to go through just to have a chance at survival. Our outcome is a happy one, and nobody would ever guess that our now 3-year-old was a preemie. If there is one benefit to all she went through it's that she is a tough girl and nobody will ever hold her back.

I am in my twenties...never had a health problem...my husband and I could not wait to start our family...I went into labor at 26 weeks and had to be life flighted to a hospital out of town- scared to death...the doctors kept me pregnant for 4 days...but my son was born at 2 pounds 3 ounces...he stayed 9 weeks in the NICU and is strong and healthy and happy. To all the moms and who are in the NICU now- stay strong...and positive...all I wanted was to fast forward my life until my son was able to come home..he was discharged April of this year- but I still cry at least once of week- just thinking about it...my thoughts go out to all the families reading this blog...

*my grandma calls him miracle baby*

by: ilovebabyisaac

I also had a preemie miracle at 25 weeks weighing at 1pd 10oz..... he was immediately intubated and transferred to the Childrens Hospital. He was born November 23, 2008 and my original due date was March 7, 2009. Baby Isaac stayed in the hospital for 3 months and 3 days we seen him everyday, asked tons of questions, met many nice and caring nurses. Somedays were good some were critical and some were even more critical but me and my husband stuck by him, we prayed and prayed for him to get better and come home. Finally he got to come home February 26,2009 which was the happiest days of our lifes, but he still required a low amount of oxygen and a heart monitor for the apnea spells...it was a very tense couple of months but we were just glad to finally get to hold him and for him to be home. Almost a year later he is a very healthy, handsome, chubby baby boy. When i found this website i automatically wanted to be apart of Fight For Preemies because i also feel that whats happening to ours babies should be explained and prevented from going through so much pain.

My Oldest Son's Birthday

10/12/09

by: FireMom

I had to fight and fight and fight to carry my three living children to term. Fight for Preemies is being held on my oldest son's birthday this year. I don't think that is a coincidence. We'll be participating for the three miracles and one lost angel in our lives.

32 and 30 weeks Gestational

My son was born 8 weeks early at 5lbs 7.5oz. A chunky monkey for a preemie and we were blessed to only have a one week NICU stay. He does have problems with his speech and suffers from asthma. His immune system is week and gets sick often. But I am so blessed to have such a wonderful little boy (who is 2 now).

My daughter was born 10 weeks early weighing 2lbs 10.25oz. She spent 6 weeks in the NICU having good days and bad days. The good days were great. The bad days were horrible. It's something I don't wish on my worst enemy. Today, she is 15 months old. Weighs 15 lbs. We have weekly physical therapy and doing great.

It's because of the March of Dimes research that I have the most wonderful children in the world.

Thrilled to finally do something

10/10/09

by: nuttbecky

I'm a lucky preemie mom. My water broke (we estimate) at somewhere around 33 weeks, and I started labor around 33.3 (which I realized something was wrong.) I was fortunate enough to have enough time in the hospital to get rounds of antibiotics and steroids. My son was born at exactly 34 weeks, weighing 4lbs 12oz and screaming his little head off. BEST.SOUND.EVER. We spent 12 days in the NICU and came home, and with the exception of some reflux that has kept us from eating as much as we should, we are a healthy happy nearly 13lb boy. I know how fortunuate I am that my son is healthy and happy because of the prenatal and postnatal care I was able to afford because of health insurance I haev.

However, this dark cloud name Senator Jon Kyle hang over Arizona. Senator Jon Kyle believes that maternity care shouldn't be included in our basic health care coverage. Could you imagine the health of mothers and babies if maternity coverage wasn't a basic right?

On Nov. 17, I fight for my son, for the potential care a second child of mine might need, and I fight against attitudes like Senator Jon Kyle. Maybe we should ask his mom if she needed her maternity care.

Every year, 20 million babies are born too soon, too small and very sick ― half a million of them in the United States. November 17 is when we fight.

Do you know a baby that was born too soon, too small, unable to suck, unable to breathe on his own? Premature birth is a health crisis that jeopardizes the lives and health of nearly half-million babies each year. It is the #1 killer of newborns and can lead to lifelong disabilities. Worse: the number has increased 31 percent since 1981. It can happen without warning and for no known reason. Until we have more answers, anyone’s baby, could be born too soon. Medical advances give even the tiniest babies a chance of survival, yet for many babies premature birth is still a life or death condition. It’s the #1 cause of death during the first month of life. And babies who survive face serious health challenges and risk lifelong disabilities. The rate of premature birth has never been higher. In half the cases, we simply don’t understand what went wrong. We need to fight for answers. And, ultimately, preventions. November 17 is dedicated to raising awareness of the crisis of premature birth. The March of Dimes invites bloggers like you to get involved. • Learn about premature birth at marchofdimes.com/fightforpreemies • Put a badge on your blog during November, Prematurity Awareness Month® • On November 17, blog for a baby you love and to help others We need to fight ― because babies shouldn’t have to. .............................................................................
