Mother's Day for Peace
http://www.mothersdayforpeace.com
May 10, 2009
Objective:
In the spirit of the original Mother's Day Proclamation, join women around the world in uniting for Peace this Mother's Day!
We are reclaiming the original intention of Mother's Day as a day for women to organize for peace.
Julia Ward Howe, best known for writing the Battle Hymn of the Republic and her stance against slavery, was horrified by the carnage and suffering during the Civil War and the economic devastation that followed. She used her poetic gift to pen a proclamation against war, a proclamation that birthed Mothers Day. The holiday wasn’t just a Hallmark creation! Read the original proclamation here: codepinkalert.org/article.php?id=217
Julia's solution? Women should gather together to "promote the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace.”
Let's come together to take back Mother's Day and honor all mothers and women who live where war is happening— where women are paying the price with their bodies, loved ones, homes, future. We want to recognize the price they pay and honor their courage and power, and stand with them in solidarity to not only tell their important stories but to model what women-centered community looks and acts like.
Let us come together to celebrate their courage, share our stories, create community, and join our voices together for peace!
