Updated WHO stats

4/24/09

by: debexaminer

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to post some updated statistics from the World Health Organization that might be useful when writing about this important topic:
www.who.int/gb/ebwha/pdf_files/MTSP2009/MTSP4-en.pdf

Here's an example: "Each year, more than five million children die from undernutrition and a further 1.8 million from food- and water-borne diarrhoeal diseases."

Hopefully we can help make a difference!

Thanks,
Dr. Deb

Seems like a Distribution Issue

4/24/09

by: mrbriandesign

Just a general observation that large segments of societies have an excess of resources when others are lacking. Like when you see a diner at a restaurant leave more than half a portion of food on plate or when a grocery store chucks a section of 'outdated goods'. If that sort of waste could be reduced and/or redistributed that must put a dent in the problem. Profit and or Greed must play a huge role in the whole subject. (?)

Is it about lack of food or do you blame it on the booming Earth's poplation

by: patrickyeoh28

I have a lot of qualms when discussing about world hunger. Is it really about the lack of food or are just there too many people to feed ? I dont know about the general concensus in the public, but I feel no matter how much vegetables you grow, or how many livestock you breed, if the general population is exponentially growing, there will be no end to hunger.

I dont know whether there are enough food to go about. Probably there is. BUt one would want to question the effectiveness of their delivery, particularly in light of the growing amount of pirates in the sea's and greedy, selfish warlords in wartorn African countries.

This is an interesting topic. This event is definitely in bloglist

Greed is the main source

4/22/09

by: 4livvybee6

Greed is the main source !!!! I believe that there is more than enough food and resources on this planet to feed us all. Those that have more than their share and feel it isn't enough, those that prefer to throw it away instead of shareing.....Really need a wake up call! We are all special! We are all deserving! All living beings deserve to have good food in their tummys and to be loved by us all!

THE FACE OF POVERTY

4/22/09

by: chidozie

When I was in the university, I learnt a feeding formula called 0-0-1 / 1-0-1.
0-0-1 meant you only ate once a day preferable at night, while 1-0-1 meant you ate twice a day, many families in my country are using these feeding formula as I speak. A few years back I was involved in an accident that saw me admitted into a public hospital, the man next to me in the hospital word was detained because he could not pay for the extra blood used during his surgical operation; he was release after he bought three of his relatives to donate blood. There saw people who were sick, starving and could not pay for the drugs. I wept. Many will go to bed tonight without food, what is been taken for granted in some part of the world (Drink water, electricity, basic health care and basic education), is a big deal here. Most school reopens on 27th April 2009, but a lot of children will not be there and will never be there. Many will be on the street hawking goods to support the family, which exposes most of female among them to rape and unsafe sex and the male to crime and other vices. I see poverty on the faces around me, when I walk down the street, everywhere I go. He who feels it, knows it. LET’S HEAL THE WORLD

A great initiative for a great cause

4/22/09

by: aks2008

Bloggerunite.org is truly a great initiative to unite bloggers for a common cause. I am honored to be a part of it. Hunger and Hope - Yes, we need to create hope among those who are going through this tragedy at present. Being in India myself, I have seen how people have to suffer like anything because of it. Just cannot be expressed in words !

Its great to see bloggers united for this global cause. I hope I can make some difference by blogging on it and which I sure will.

But what matters is that i do not accept others to be hungry ! "

    http://www.heifer.org/site/c.s…

All you have to do to help end world hunger is to join thousands of others bloggers on April 29 and write a post about world hunger.

BlogCatalog members and Heifer International are partnering to call for the end of world hunger and start of hope on April 29. All we ask is that you join thousands of other bloggers and write a post about world hunger on April 29. You can make a difference. • Right now, more than 500 million people are living in "absolute poverty" and more than 15 million children die of hunger every year. • World Health Organization estimates that one-third of the population is underfed and another third is starving. • Even in the United States, 46 percent of African-American children and 49 percent of Latino children are considered chronically hungry. Organizations like Heifer International are the solution. Every day in April, Heifer International is lifting people out of poverty by providing communities with livestock and agricultural training to improve lives and inspire hope. What can you do? • Join this event and add a badge to your blog before April 29. • Watch for upcoming news releases and topic backgrounders. • Visit Heifer International to learn more about Pass On The Gift. • Make a small donation or take some other action to end world hunger. • Post about world hunger on April 29 with links to solutions all over the world. Select posts will be featured by BlogCatalog; Heifer International; Copywrite, Ink.; and on the future Bloggers Unite blog. Details to follow.
