World Press Freedom Day Comments

Freedom of the Press Day
I'm glad so many bloggers are adding their voices to this observation. Of course, a few people who submitted their articles here did not even mention it which I find strange...

World Press Freedom Day
Today is a day where you can really appreciate the people from the previous history who have given you all the rights we use everyday. Being a female, not everyone knows that the law was passed saying that women could vote was in 1920. There was a group of women who fought long and hard against the Goverment called the Women's Peace Party. How many know about the Women's Peace Party? There is only 1 paragraph in the text book I read out of about it. Don't you think getting to vote is a pretty big deal? Then why is there only ONE paragraphy about it in the text books kids learn out of these days. All I am trying to say is if you have a minute today, go on Google and you will find some truly amazing people and facts that you didn't know about. Not a lot of people get credit for what they do, so today is a day we can reflect on their awesome work!

John Milton on Freedom of Expression
janetjarrell.blogspot.com/
In 1644 at the height of the English Civil War, John Milton penned Areopagitica, which is now known as one of history’s first impassioned defences to freedom of expression. Ironically, Milton never delivered this argument verbally, however there was no need, the message was clear; to allow freedom of speech in written form. John Milton may have been more concerned about religion and less with the politics of war; unfortunately, history has seen these two go hand in hand.
Thanks to John Milton, and all who followed and fought for the right to freedom of expression. Thank you to all who exercise this right and provide the poetry, novels and the daily news which combined help to map out our history.

The Bogside Artists' Blog
We must support this virtally important cause as it is clear from our own experience that freedom of speech is severely under threat from the legal establishment in particular that seeks to bound and gag all of us into a phobia about speaking our minds. Our run-in with Rowling's solicitors, the notorious Schillings is a case in point that you can find out about from our website; www.bogsideartists.com. Commentary on a book written by William Kelly, one of our group has been effectively stopped directly or indirectly in three newspapers already by Schillings, Rowling's legal reps - The Irish Examiner, The Guardian and The Derry News that was forced to issue an apology for making connections deemed to be false between the book TRAVELS WITH LI PO and the Harry Potter series. Other papers we have approached simply back off for fear of reprisal. It is our view that this sort of bullying is profoundly detrimental to freedom of speech and free artistic expression both of which are enshrined in our constitutions. Or are we all to sit back and lament the passing of the days when great writers such as Shaw and Wilde became great precisely because they could speak their minds freely? This is a cause we must all support. Feel free to comment on this at www.thebogsideartists.wordpress.com

World Press Freedom Day is annually observed on May 3 to inform the international community that freedom of the press and freedom of expression are fundamental
The United Nations General Assembly declared 3 May to be World Press Freedom Day[1][2] to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and marking the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek, a statement of free press principles put together by African newspaper journalists in 1991.

It is very good to know that the awareness of everyone's first ammendment right is being observed. It is to often that we are expected to remain silent and turn our heads becuase the right thing to say is not accepted in society.
