World Press Freedom Day is annually observed on May 3 to inform the international community that freedom of the press and freedom of expression are fundamental
The United Nations General Assembly declared 3 May to be World Press Freedom Day[1][2] to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and marking the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek, a statement of free press principles put together by African newspaper journalists in 1991.

Artists can offer insightful observations about society and humanity.

It appears that even in democratic societies such as Australia, individuals in lower socio- economic brackets are disadvantaged and have to work even harder to compete in particular industries such as the creative arts; in an attempt to secure meaningful employment and a fair share of opportunity.I have only recently become aware of World Press Freedom Day. I hope that artists in Australia (and elsewhere) might get behind this project to promote the rights of artists which appear to be eroding in an ever increasing morass of mass media stereotyping of artists, and hyping up of art and visual culture based on youth, and hipster sreet values.
Not all artists feel the need nor want to comply with these narrow definitions which prefer to process artists into fashion savvy fame seeking fodder. Bring back appreciation for deeper values and philosophy into the arts. Bring back the community murals which engaged communities and addressed societal issues.Let's get beyond the flash-in-pan reality-TV mediated thinking and support sustainable arts practice.
