The preservation of the freedom of the press goes hand-in-hand with journalistic ethics. Aside from reporting on the ever-diminishing (on a global scale) freedom of the press, and the many violations committed worldwide, we should all strive to maintain a sound ethical foundation to our articles and investigations. Freedom does not come without responsibility.

That said, more and more people, Americans in particular, are swayed by biased and unethical news programs. Ignorance is reigning. On a GLOBAL scale, press freedoms have slowly been chipped away. [ www.csmonitor.com/USA/Foreign-Policy/2010/0429/Press-freedom-falls-around-t... ]. It's a sad reality.

The Society of Professional Journalists has an excellent Code of Ethics [ www.spj.org/ethicscode.asp ]. To preserve and protect freedom of the press we all need to hold each other to these standards.

World Press Freedom Day is annually observed on May 3 to inform the international community that freedom of the press and freedom of expression are fundamental

The United Nations General Assembly declared 3 May to be World Press Freedom Day[1][2] to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and marking the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek, a statement of free press principles put together by African newspaper journalists in 1991.
