The Origin of World Kindness Movement from one of it's Founders

Celebrating a Decade of Kindness...

Dear World Kindness Family,

A decade ago, Dr. Mori and the Small Kindness Movement of Japan dared to envision a kinder world beyond the borders of their own country. Like modern day pioneers, the SKM gathered like-minded organizations from Singapore, UK, Canada, South Korea and the USA, to explore new possibilities - to form a global kindness network!

From this initial conference in Tokyo, a spark was ignited! The basic objective, in preparation for the 21st century, "to ensure peace on earth through small kindnesses." In a joint declaration, the representatives pledged to spread the spirit of these meetings not only through their home countries but also through a united international voice!

Much has happened over the past ten years. The World Kindness Movement was formed in 1997, World Kindness Day was established and five more conferences were hosted! Most wonderfully, the World Kindness Movement has a Secretariat based in Singapore and has grown to nineteen countries!!!

There is much to celebrate on November 13th, 2006! Our global mission to connect individuals and countries to create a kinder and more compassionate world is evolving in so many interesting ways. The vibrancy and love that emanates from each and every act of kindness, committed in each country, has an immeasurable ripple effect that is felt around the world!

Let us thank Dr. Mori and the Small Kindness Movement of Japan for their powerful belief that by joining hands worldwide to sustain and promote human kindness, we can all make a positive difference on this planet that we call "home!"

"When we are devoted to the development of kindness….it becomes a movement of the heart so deep and subtle it is like a movement of the sea close to the ocean floor, all but hidden yet affecting absolutely everything that happens above. That's the force of kindness." - Sharon Saltzberg
Happy World Kindness Day!!!!

Sincerely,
Debbie Riopel
Founding Member of the World Kindness Movement

It's much more than just helping to clean up the mess.

Yes we can and we should help. Here are some resources www.bloggersunite.org/event/bloggersunite-for-the-gulf

We need to start standing up for doing the right thing. When did Americans just accept that whatever our government did was ok as long as were able to criticize them? Nothing dramatic has been created in the U.S. without great action from the people.

New Orleans was sad enough. We now see evidence of an impotent government. While Im sure good intentioned, they aren't going to change unless we force them to change.

We are spending billions on death. Why not on life?

Great outpouring of support by bloggers and the social media community for Haiti

1/17/10

by: TonyB

It's probably really difficult to tell the exact impact that social media has had in mobilizing money and support to help the people of Haiti, though I am 100% certain that without bloggers contributing time, writing to their politicians, rallying round non profits - on and offline - there would be a material difference in the amount of money raised and the resources going to save people's lives.

Don't lie to yourself.

1/16/10

by: TonyB

It’s so easy for humans to dismiss and justify why we shouldn’t or can’t help when a tragic event takes place in other areas of the world or even in neighborhoods that aren’t “our own”.

What goes through our heads to do this? Our ability to justify is miraculous - on some weird level. If there is one thing we are all experts at its the ability to justify why something is true when we know deep down it is not.

Many of us have become so good at justification that we don’t even notice that little voice saying, “you know you’re telling yourself nonsense.”

What’s your way of justifying not helping a fellow human out? “Oh, well I don’t help out when other tragedies occur, why should I help this time?” “I have my own problems to deal with and I don’t even know who these people are?” ”The government and non profits will help and I really don’t have the money or time to do something?” ”Because my kid is sick, my dog got run over and I’m behind on my car payment.” Some people will even justify why not to help based based on a religious story.

What is the story you tell yourself about why you shouldn’t help out? Do you tell yourself, it’s not my problem?

The fact is it is your problem. It is my problem. It is the world’s problem. The people of Haiti haven’t had it good even in the best of times. A poor nation. Plenty of hunger. Plenty of health problems. They, like any of us, could be struck by a tragedy not brought on by anything we did wrong.

The people of the world and especially the people of the US need to step up and take responsibility. That includes you. If you make $30,000 a year or more you are in the top 1/10th of 1% of the world’s wealthiest people. Did you know this?

You have it good compared to over 99.9% of the world. Yet we have the nerve to complain about how bad the U.S. economy is. Have you seen Haiti? Have you watched the news?

Or is it easier to turn a blind eye and pretend this doesn’t affect you? It does affect you because turning away affects you. It affects what you feel and think about yourself.

Now is a time to give whatever you can. Do what you can to help a helpless people. As you read these words another person there lost his or her life. A child. A mother. A brother. A sister. A father. A son. A daughter.

What would you want the world to do for you, if this happened where you live? Is it so far out of the realm of possibilities that an event like this could happen right where you are, this moment?

Do what you can. Give what you can. If you’re a blogger, write a post. Raise money on your blog using the widgets you can find on BloggersUnite.org. If you have physical strength and the freedom to travel, then go help. If you can’t move, and don’t have enough money to eat, then pray. If you can’t pray because you don’t believe it does anything, then send food or donate money to an organization like Doctors without Borders - who can make a direct difference. Just do something that makes a contribution.

Do something to help. Do anything.

Doctors without Borders

1/14/10

by: TonyB

They can save lives in Haiti. Medical care is what's needed. Doctors without Borders specializes in disaster services. The more money they raise the more lives will be saved. There is a direct correlation between how many resources they have and how many lives they will save.

A number of great ideas for how to serve and give back this Saturday

11/19/09

by: TonyB

www.halfhourmeals.com/food-for-thought/its-time-to-give-back/

Ideas include taking a brown bag and not including the turkey but rather including a gift certificate for a turkey from your local supermarket and then fill the rest of the bag with side dihses and desserts.

Please, if you particpate, take photos of what you do, the preparation, your feelings and post them on your blog & then here so we can all have an easy way of finding your post. It will make this experience more moving and fullfilling for all of us if we feel like w are making a difference together.

If you know family or friends who want to join them invite them too. The more the merrier. Im going to go with my 2 young nephews, Jacob & Michael, so that they can appreciate how truly blessed they are and also to help the to connect with the feeling of how fulfilling it feels to lend a hand to someone in need.

Please include any other ideas here too.

Health Accompanies Wealth According to Los Angeles Study

Map of Los Angeles showing premature births and prenatal care by county. bit.ly/2FHTy9

In a news article written by journalists Deborah Stokol on bit.ly/2Ca9It

"As long as she is pregnant, a woman living in the United States may receive medical care. So even the homeless, the undocumented, “the tired [and] poor,” may visit a doctor while expecting.

Yet for the inhabitants of Los Angeles County, health continues to accompany wealth. L.A.’s southernmost areas sustain the highest rates of premature births, gestational diabetes and hypertension in the county.

Every pregnant woman residing there may attain prenatal care, but for many, that is either not enough to reverse years’ worth of physical negligence, its acquisition still does little to provide them with the attention they need or they do not seek that care in the first place. ...
