veteran-palooza over at Black Tie And Flip Flops

11/11/09

by: johnleesandiego

Over the course of the day at Black Tie and Flip Flops today a series of veterans-related articles will be posted; including some re-posts from the past, highlighting veterans in the United States. Most will be related to foodpolicy, soup kitchen, and shelters as I spend a great deal of time working in those ministries in the Episcopal Diocese of Newark NJ.

In addition, the Veterans Organizations featured on the bloggers unite event for today will be featured in our regular Thursday "Favourite Websites:" over the next several months so that after writing about them today we'll re-blog-cast them to keep Veterans front and center of the American consciousness.

We'll also be tweeting and facebooking the organizations today.

Earth Hour 2010 ?

3/31/09

by: johnleesandiego

Earth Hour 2010 is 27 March 2010 (Earth Hour is always the last Saturday in March)

I do not see an Earth Hour 2010 event yet, and my attempt to create one was denied. Hmmm. But I persist!

An Earth Hour 2010 goal has been established on the goal oriented website 43things.com : www.43things.com/things/view/2483045/illuminate-awareness-of-climate-change... for those who might be interested.

Cheers

Suburban Solutions

3/29/09

by: johnleesandiego

Here in the suburbs of New York City it is very easy to feel helpless about the issue of fresh water - the problems of which are a world away. Fresh water is so abundant here, and cheap. Being from California I was shocked that my 3 month water bill here was less than a month in San Diego, but that's another story altogether.

In much of the United States there is a great deal of education and awareness of what is downstream. By now just about everyone has at least heard of the dangers to water supplies, both fresh and nearby oceans, from storm water runoff. Trash in the steets, dog waste, oils and other drippings from cars make their way to rivers, lakes, estuaries and the ocean by way of storm drains. We don't however give much thought to where all that storm water comes from.

With the massive amounts of paving across the United States, water that normally would have percolated into the soil and find its way to aquifers if making its way into the storm drain system. So what can I do?

In the past few weeks, and as the weather gets a bit warmer in the coming weeks, I will be redirecting the downspouts on my house so that the rainwater that was being directed toward the street will now find its way into the gardens. An area of my front lawn is scheduled to be dug out just a little, creating a depression, to collect some of the water so that it has a better chance to percolate into the soil.

Even though I have gardened organically for years, and despite not watering the lawns have always had the greenest most lush lawn in the neighborhood, I realized that the run off from my property while not toxic does contribute to erosion river banks during storms, and anything eroded from the Third River and Passaic River evenually finds its way into New York Harbor - so I do have a global impact.

My little effort isn't going to change the world, but if, like Earth Hour, a few people catch on, and a few more do it a bit later, real change can occur in our own back yards.

Earth Hour All Year Round

3/27/09

by: johnleesandiego

I have been writing about Earth Hour since the last Earth Hour.

Earth Hour 2010 will take place on 27 March 2010. So, starting with 27 April 2009, and continuing every month until Earth Hour I will be counting down the months both on my blog and my company blog.

Pictures of the before and afters of world monuments will be included, as well as tips and ideas to make Earth Hour a fun occassion for people everywhere. Links, lots of links, to organizations that participated in Earth Hour 2009 will also be included - these will be anything from local restaurant associations, to sports clubs, to churches.

I am very hopeful that Earth Hour will finally be recognized in the United States in 2009, with 2010 being even bigger (or is darker more appropriate). It is my understanding that both the White House and the Capitol Building will go dark tomorrow evening (oh how I love the Obamas).

So here's to establishing my goal of blogging for Earth Hour 2010!

It's coming to America

word on the street is that most of the major monuments in Washington DC will go dark for the hour; I am thinking of heading to the Hudson River to watch Manhattan go dark ... last year was a start for us in the states - let's see how dark we can make Earth Hour 2009!
